01 The curating process
Although putting on an art exhibition might sound straightforward, it is in fact tremendously difficult work. Done badly, it would spoil the whole exhibition even if the works themselves were good. That work is called curating.
02 Designing the space
Design is a matter of vital importance where an art exhibition is concerned. Which work should the visitor see first? At what height should the works be hung? Which frame would be the most suitable? A curator must have an answer to all these questions, because the way the works are arranged is crucial. In fact the exhibition is normally laid out with photographs of the paintings first. That gives an idea in advance of what is wanted, before the works are moved. Lighting is a delicate matter too, since a mistake here could push some of the works to the margins or strip others of their charm. Everything must be perfectly lit. And depending on the work, special kinds of lighting may be needed.
03 Care in the space
This is a very important aspect, because negligence here is unacceptable. It could cause irreparable damage or cost large sums of money. Works must always be handled with the greatest care. Cotton gloves should be worn whenever they are touched, so as not to leave grease marks or even fingerprints. The place where they are shown must be in perfect condition as regards cleanliness, or the work could be soiled. In most cases it is advisable to mark out a sensible space around the work that visitors cannot enter. One of the greatest risks comes when the works are moved.
