At this moment you are about to put on show hours of work that you, or the artist you are helping, have devoted with such love to creating wonderful works. The presentation of that artistic genius is now in your hands and you cannot let it down. In this article we give you some recommendations so that you install the exhibition in the best possible way.
01 It all depends on the kind of gallery
Hundreds of questions crowd your mind as you plan an exhibition installation. Do I have enough works to fill this vast emptiness? Will it look good? Is my art a pile of rubbish, and should I leave now? The important thing here is to stop torturing yourself and get to work. You should start by measuring the space prepared for the exhibition. That will let you plan how many works you need to hang. Do not suffer over how your works will look: well designed galleries manage to make everything look perfect. Those bright white lights in the ceiling make almost anything look like thousands of euros; you only have to place each piece in the best spot. Most galleries that host artists’ exhibitions have some kind of hanging system. Ideally you would plan out the type of system you prefer. Clear nylon hangers that drop from the ceiling and the wall, with small adjustable metal hooks, are ideal in many cases. If you want to be ready for the unexpected, take a small box with the tools you might need. Take spare wire and cord, screws, wall hooks, nails, adhesive tape, double-sided sticky pads and a hammer: any of these could get you out of trouble.
02 Once the transport has arrived with your works of art
The first thing to do is to unload the vehicle. Then stand all the works of art around the walls on the floor. Do not hang them yet, simply place them around the room. Arrange them in semi-ordered thematic groups, putting each piece in the area where it might eventually hang. The thematic groups can be whatever you want them to be. Stand in the middle of the room and look around: do all the works of art “work” together? Use your imagination and think how they would look hung. Start sorting and moving the works of art around the walls until you are satisfied. Put the pieces you consider the strongest in the prime positions, and arrange the others around them.
